ABOUT

Woodend Christian Camp was established in the late 1950’s (Woodend Youth Lodge) to provide our region with a facility to support and encourage youth and local churches. The camp is administered by the Woodend Camp Trust (a registered charitable trust, NZ Charities Commission Reg. CC35550). Over the years we have expanded our vision and now offer a great facility to churches, schools and community groups but still with our emphasis on promoting Christian values and faith in the Lord Jesus.

HISTORY

Back in the 1950's campsites in the Canterbury area with a Christian base were very limited. Mr J.M.Paynter had the vision to establish a campsite under the umbrella of some local churches. The emphasis was to be on youth but also to support local churches offering facilities for conferences, family church weekends and for other Christian organisations.

Once a suitable site was located a meeting was called for all interested parties to pass on the vision and register their interest. The response was very good and a Trust Board was formed. Finances were soon raised and with the help of many volunteers work soon began.

The Woodend site was very rough, covered in gorse, broom and sandhills. Before building commenced, access had to be gained and the site cleared. The area was infested with rabbits and a rabbit proof fence was erected around the perimeter. Trees were soon planted and the main complex was built in 1957.

DONATIONS

The development of the past and of present has been made possible through community grants and donations. Although the camp generates income from the camp fees this only covers the day to day running, and for us to further improve, maintain and develop our facilities we continue to rely upon further donations and funding grants.

If you wish to assist in supporting WCC for the future here are some ways you could do it.
